    Wow, this is the most impressive critique of Harry Potter I've ever come across. Very well done! It's a relief to see how you've come to embrace the idea of humanity. When you say that in our society suffering is seen as a problem, a disease you have to cure yourself from, then what I'm hearing you say is that for our society the idea of embracing humanity is too bewildering.

    We've come a long way, but unfortunately the wrong way. I've been thinking lately: if what we're going through is indeed truly a recession or even depression than that would sadden we very much. Because it would mean we're going through a slump, and we will eventually return to the old ways after this is over. I certainly hope the old ways are not returning, and I will certainly do all that I can do to prevent this from happening.

    Immanuel Kant says it's humanity's destiny to create not just society but world society. He says society is born out of suffering. What we have created is a society that guarantees suffering, except maybe for the hedonists. I think we need to come to terms with our humanity:

    * who are we?
    * what have we gone through?
    * what do we have in common?
    * what is working for us, and what isn't?
    * what does it mean to be human?

    These are difficult questions. Each person has to ask these questions. Each person has to choose whether to pursue the consequences of these questions. And each person has to go through the discomfort of leaving behind the known and exchanging it for uncertainty.

    This are extraordinary times: the uncertainty and chaos leads to inaction by those that under normal circumstance regulate and like certainty, and leads to action by those that normally suffer and like uncertainty.

    Who will win will be determined by those that are the most determined, and the most human. I think those that like uncertainty have a significant advantage for now, simply because through their hard work uncertainty persists and any attempts to regulate and stabilize will fail.

    My conclusion is that humans look inside themselves, and explore our extremely social nature, in times of uncertainty. When we are living by a sense of stability we stop being human. I believe human beings need uncertainty to thrive and be happy. I believe power and dominance must be subverted, and I believe the activating emotions of urgency, hope, self-esteem, anger and solidarity are our strongest weapons. Now is the time to use them in full force and pursue them to their logical conclusions, just like Harry Potter did.

    Once we're used to no longer live stable lives but instead uncertain lives, that my friend would only be start of man's greatest adventures.

    Steven
