The quintessential history of the expedition. Makes the story come alive. The place to start. (*****)

DeVoto's introduction is worth the price of this edition of the journals. (*****)
Meriwether Lewis: The Lewis and Clark Journals: An American Epic of Discovery (Lewis & Clark Expedition)

Meriwether Lewis: The Lewis and Clark Expedition: Selections from the Journals, Arranged by Topics (Bedford Series in History and Culture)
If you can find this book, snap it up. This is an excellent collection of journal portions by topic. What is also most helpful is an excellent chronology, four very simple, clear understandable maps, the invoice of articles send to President Jefferson from Fort Mandan, a list of questions for reflection, and a supplemental reading list that presents the best of the literature as of 1998. Bernard DeVoto: The Course of Empire
One of my favorite books. A well written account of the exploration of the western United States and Canada before Lewis & Clark. This book along with his introduction in his edition of the journals provides an historical context that gives the reader a better sense of what this adventure meant at the time. (*****)
